Applicants for hedgerows and boundaries and woodland management grants can now be made online via the Rural Payments service. The service can ensure only eligible fields are included - instant confirmation is provided once an application is submitted. Asda launches free-range milk
Asda has declared that it has become the first UK retailer to sell free-range milk – where it's guaranteed that dairy cows have grazed outdoors for at least six months of the year. Both semi-skimmed and whole milk are now for sale in 109 Asda stores, in one and two litre bottles, priced at 90p and £1.50 respectively.

New approach to great crested newt licensing
A fresh approach to the conservation of great crested newts is to be rolled out across England, having been piloted by Woking Borough Council in Surrey. The move is aimed at improving the licensing process for housing developers by surveying areas where the newts are most prevalent, mapping the potential impacts of development, and proposing local conservation strategies for the species, in partnership.

Applications are being invited for the Countryside Stewardship hedgerows and boundaries grant which opens today (1st February 2017). The grant, individually worth up to £5,000, is designed to help farmers and other land managers improve important farmland boundaries and the application window for the £5 million scheme closes on 28th April.

Experts from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) have reviewed the measures taken in the EU to reduce antimicrobials use in animals and are stressing that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. According to the findings, successful strategies follow an integrated, multifaceted approach which takes into account the local livestock production system and involves all relevant stakeholders — from governments to farmers.
